You can see that your cylinder is still in good shape from the crosshatch pattern on the cylinder liner. However, this pattern will fade after a while, which makes refinishing the cylinder necessary. Another reason for honing may be a seize-up that scores the bore surface. Any well-equipped toolbox should definitely include a honing tool.
